BALTIMORE – Coppin State women's basketball team remains undefeated in the PEC Arena defeating St. Francis 68-38 Sunday afternoon.
Coppin is now 2-0 at home for the first time since the 2013-14 season.
The Eagles move to 3-3 on the season while Saint Francis is 0-5. Coppin is now 1-2 in the all-time record verses the Red Flash.
Freshman
Jewel Watkins led all scorers with a career-high 16 points and seven rebounds.
Mossi Staples dished in 14 points while
Aliyah Lawson notched 10 points with four rebounds.
Alexandria Hamilton recorded 11 points while
Jalynda Salley tailed eight.
Jaia Alexander led the team in rebounds with four.
Coppin shot 13-20 from the free throw line.
In the first quarter, the Eagles threw the first punch with a layup by Salley, and back-to-back threes from Lawson and Hamilton. Coppin went on a 12-0 run and contained St. Francis to four points in the first quarter. Watkins and Sallley played well off each other in the second quarter, as they scored a combined eight points throughout the quarter. By halftime, the Eagles led by 23 with a score of 42-19.
Staples scored five straight points to start the third quarter, as Watkins led a 6-0 run in mid-quarter to maintain a 24-point lead for Coppin. By the fourth quarter, Salley scored a layup off of her put-back to place the Eagles at their largest lead of the game, as Red Flash trailed by 33 points (65-32). St. Francis was unable to compensate for their deficit, and the Eagles secured their second straight home win with a final score of 68-38.
CSU is back in action December 4 traveling to Huntington, West Virginia to take on Marshall. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 pm inside Cam Henderson Center.
