Coppin Women Hoops Take on East Carolina Tuesday

BALTIMORE – Coppin State women's basketball team travel to Greenville, North Carolina to take on the Pirates of East Carolina tomorrow, November 21 inside the Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum. The game will be live streamed.

Opening Tip
This will be the fourth match-up between the Eagles and Pirates with ECU leading the all-time series 3-1. The very first meeting between the two teams was January 9, 1993 with the Eagles winning 74-60. The last match-up was December 6, 2003 with ECU winning 68-59.
 
Last Time Out
Coppin State women's basketball fell to No. 24 Virginia Tech on November 17, 85-35. Mossi Staples led the Eagles in points (9) and steals (2). Staples also led the Eagles in three-point field goal made, as she hit two threes for the night.  She was the second leader in rebounds with four boards, as Jaia Alexander and Jalynda Salley both led the team in rebounds, recording five each.  Alexander was the second leading scorer for Coppin, with eight points, and the only player with a block.  Salley finished the night with six points and went 2-2 from the free-throw line.

Jaia Alexander leads the team in points per game (20.0) and 27 rebounds, followed by Aliyah Lawson (7.8) and Jalynda Salley (7.8). Colleen Bucknor is second on the team in rebounds with 26. Mossi Staples leads the team in steals (8) followed by Nailah Delinois (4).

A Second Team All-MEAC selection last season, Aliyah Lawson finished second in the conference with 14.5 points per game while ranking third with 38 3-point field goals.  A native of Whitby, Ontario, Canada, Lawson also finished with 4.5 rebounds per game to go with 24 assists and 17 steals. Lawson received three MEAC Player of the Week awards, scored at least 20 points in four games and reached double figures in 12 games.
 
Lawson scored a career-high 27 points with five 3-pointers to go with a career-high 12 rebounds for her first-ever double-double against Morgan State. In her two seasons at Coppin, Lawson ranks sixth in CSU history in 3-point field goals (84) and free throw percentage (72.4%).
 
Jalynda Salley received Third Team All-MEAC and All-Defensive Team honors last season after averaging 9.3 points per game while ranking fourth in the MEAC in rebounds (8.8) and seventh in blocks (18).  A native of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, Salley led the conference with 4.1 offensive rebounds per game which ranked 18th nationally.  In MEAC games, Salley averaged 10.0 points and 9.6 rebounds with a pair of double doubles.
 
Salley has recorded 84 career blocks which moves her to seventh in CSU history.

The Eagles welcomed in 10 student-athletes this season including: Mossi StaplesNadjy TylerJewel WatkinsJaia AlexanderColleen BucknorKhya Jenkins and Cortney Gardner.

Scouting the Pirates
ECU fell 73-52 to Wake Forest on November 21. Danae McNeal led the Pirates in scoring, finishing with 13 points, including 10 after halftime. Alexsia Rose scored a career-high 11 points for ECU reaching double figures for the first time in her career.
The Pirates are led by Taniyah Thompson who leads the team in points with 16.6 followed by McNeal with 10.4 points per game. Tiara Chambers leads in rebounds (26) and blocks (5).

Coppin will return home on Sunday, November 28 to host Saint Francis (Pa.) inside the PEC Arean. Tip-off is slated for 1 pm.
