BALTIMORE – Aliyah Lawson scored 12 points and
Hope Evans scored a season-high ten points but the Coppin State women's basketball team fell to MEAC rival Delaware State, 60-45, on Tuesday night at PEC Arena. The Eagles now stand at 1-3 overall with a 1-1 mark in league play while the Hornets move to 2-3 on the year with an identical 1-1 record in conference play.
Evans was also strong on the defensive end, finishing with five rebounds and five steals.
Abby Weiss added eight points off the bench for Coppin while
Jalynda Salley recorded seven points along with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Delaware State led by as many as 24-11 with 3:07 left in the second period but Coppin battled back with an 8-1 run to close the period and go into the break trailing, 25-19. Four different Eagles scored in the final three-plus minutes during the stretch.
The Eagles kept the momentum to start the second half with eight-straight points to open the quarter, punctuated by a three-point by Salley with 7:49 left in the third. Salley's and-one gave the Eagles a 27-25 lead, but Delaware State tied it back up at 31 and closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to go up, 36-31 entering the fourth.
The Hornets opened the fourth with a three and began to pull away, outscoring CSU, 24-14 in the period to split the series.
Coppin outshot Delaware State, 40.5% to 33.8%, but turned the ball over 33 times which led to 28 points for the Hornets.
CSU returns to action on January 16-17 at Howard for back-to-back 2 pm tipoffs.
