WASHINGTON, D.C. – Jalynda Salley notched a double-double with a season-high 13 points and 14 rebounds but Coppin State's women's basketball team battled foul trouble throughout in a 60-51 loss at Howard on Sunday afternoon at Burr Gymnasium. The Eagles now stand at 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the MEAC while the Bison move to 7-2 on the year and 3-1 in league play.
Salley came off the bench and made a career-high 7-of-10 free throws along with three inside buckets to score a team-high 13 points.
Alexandria Hamilton matched Salley with 13 points while
Aliyah Lawson, who was limited to just six first half minutes due to three early fouls, scored all 11 of her points in the second half.
Rebecca Wilson added a season-high eight points to go with seven rebounds and two blocks and
Abby Weiss chipped in with five points.
Hamilton and Wilson scored all of Coppin's points in the first quarter with Hamilton scoring six, including a pair of free throws that gave the Eagles a 10-8 advantage with just under three minutes remaining. Howard was able to outscore the Eagles the rest of the way and held a 13-10 lead going into the second.
The Bison added to their lead to start the second but Coppin battled back, tying the score at 19-19 as Salley led CSU on a 9-2 run. The hosts were able to regroup, however and scored nine-straight points and maintained that advantage going into the half.
Lawson buried a 3-pointer to start the third quarter, her first of three in the period, but Howard hit a pair of jumpers to go up 36-26. Hamilton answered with a three to spark a 13-2 run which gave them a 39-38 advantage as Lawson hit a triple with 4:40 remaining.
Howard led 47-43 going into the fourth and scored the first three points of the period to take a seven-point advantage. Weiss answered for Coppin with a three at the 8:18 mark, cutting the deficit back to just 50-46, but that was as close as the Eagles got the rest of the way.
CSU is off next weekend and will host Morgan State on January 30-31 in back-to-back 12 pm tipoffs.
