JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Nia Bowe hit a home run and drove in five runs but the Coppin State softball team dropped a pair of games at Saint Peter's University in their regular season finale. The Eagles (14-24), lost the first game, 8-7, before taking an 11-3 loss in the nighthcap.
A freshman from Del., Bowe hit her tenth home run of the season in the opener, tying a Coppin single-season record for roundtrippers in a season (Paige Arnold, 2010). Bowe's ten home runs is the third-most in the MEAC this season.
In game one, Coppin fell behind, 1-0, after the first before Bowe tied it up with one swing in the second. Once again, the Peacocks went back on top, but for the second-straight inning the Eagles were able to tie it up, this time with an RBI double by
Cayla Brown which scored
Cloe' Ochoa.
Saint Peter's put up a crooked four spot in the third off starting pitcher
Dakota Gartrell to take a 6-2 lead, but after a scoreless fourth, Coppin erupted for five runs in the fifth. Ochoa and
Kylie Flagler started the rally with back-to-back singles before Bowe drove in Ochoa with a double to left.
Nicole Ullman followed up with a single to score Flagler and
Megan Brogden homered to give CSU a 7-6 lead.
The Peacocks regained the lead with two runs in their half of the inning and Coppin left three runners stranded in the next two innings to take the loss.
Bowe cleared the bases with a three-run single in the top of the third in game two but that was all of the runs that Coppin mustered in the nightcap. Saint Peter's cut into the deficit with a run in the third off Brogden and another two runs off her in the fifth before Gartrell relieved her.
Gartrell gave up another run in the inning before retiring the side but SPU added seven runs in the sixth to seal the win.
Coppin will return to action on March 10-12 at the MEAC Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla.
