Softball Falls in 13-Inning Marathon to Hampton, 4-3, in MEAC Tournament

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Coppin State's softball season came to a heartbreaking end as the Eagles fell to Hampton, 4-3, in a 13-inning affair in the MEAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon at Ormond Beach Sports Complex.  The Eagles end the year with a 14-26 record which is their most wins since 2013.

With the score tied at two since the fourth inning, Cayla Brown slugged a home run to left field in the 12th inning, giving CSU a 3-2 advantage.  Hampton, however managed to tie the score in its half of the inning as Dasha Hill scored on a single by the Pirates Alana VanDenburg.  Vandenburg then stole second and appeared to score the game-winner after a single but was called out on an appeal for not tuching home plate, keeping the score tied at three.

The Eagles put a pair of runners on in the 13th with singles by Haley Bravo, and Megan Narvaez who had four hits on the day, but came up empty.  The Pirates were able to score the game-winner after a walk, sacrifice bunt and a single up the middle by Sarah Kollas.

Madison Didion threw all 12.1 innings for the Navy & Gold, allowing just two earned runs while striking out six.

Both teams scored early on with runs in the first inning.  Kylie Flagler was credited with an RBI on a bases-loaded walk to put Coppin on top, 1-0, but the Eagles left the bases loaded, one of 14 runners left stranded.

Hampton answered right back with a run in its half of the frame, but Brown, who recorded three hits on the day, put Coppin back on top with an RBI single in the third.  Scoring on the play was Patricia Soria who reached on an error before stealing second just prior.

The Pirates eventually tied the score in the fourth, and Coppin threatened to take the lead in the next four innings but had runners thrown out at home in both the fifth and eighth innings.
