BALTIMORE, Md. – Nia Bowe kept up her hot hitting but the Coppin State softball team fell to Omaha, 10-5, on Thursday afternoon at CSU Softball Field. The Eagles fall to 2-6 on the year while the Mavericks improve to 10-11.
A freshman from Milford, Del., Bowe went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs and also drew a walk. Unfortunately, only
Cayla Brown and
Nicole Ullman were able to muster base hits for the Navy & Gold on the day.
Bowe gave Coppin a 3-0 lead after the bottom of the first inning with her first career home run, a two-run blast to left field. Scoring on the play was Brown who reached on a fielding error deep in left field which brought in
Megan Narvaez who led off with a walk.
Omaha got a run back with a solo home run off
Madison Didion to start the second but the Eagles were able to get that run back and tacked on another in the third. With two outs, the Mavericks committed three-straight errors which allowed
Cloe' Ochoa,
Patricia Soria and Brown to reach base. Bowe then went opposite field for a two-run double to drive in both Ochoa and Soria.
Those would be the last runs Coppin would score the remainder of the game as Omaha cut the deficit to 5-4 with a run in the fourth before taking the lead with two more in the sixth. The Mavericks added four insurance runs in the top of the seventh and although Coppin loaded the bases in the seventh, Omaha came out of the frame unscathed.
Didion suffered her first loss of the season despite matching her season-high with eight strikeouts. Didion threw 156 pitches on the day with 104 going for strikes.
Laura Roecker got the win in relief for Omaha, pitching the last six innings and allowing two unearned runs on three hits while striking out eight and walking five. She replaced Halley Jones who allowed three unearned runs in the first inning.
Coppin returns to action on Saturday, March 10 when it hosts St. Bonaventure in a 10 am doubleheader.
