BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State's softball team was swept in a doubleheader by visiting University at Albany on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles were edged, 8-6 in the opener before dropping game two, 13-1.
Madison Didion took the loss in game one despite striking out eight batters on the day. Didion was credited with eight earned runs on12 hits in the complete game.
Coppin got out to an early 1-0 lead in its first at-bat of the day on an RBI double by
Cayla Brown.
Cloe' Ochoa and
Patricia Soria got the offense started with back-to-back one-out walks before Brown hit a shot over the right fielder's head for a double, allowing Ochoa to score.
Albany got four runs on five hits in the second before the Eagles cut the deficit to 4-3 after the third inning. Soria hit the gap in left center to score Ochoa who singled just prior. Later in the frame,
Haley Bravo drew a bases loaded walk to score
Nia Bowe from third.
The Great Danes answered with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth before adding an extra run in the seventh to extend their advantage to 8-3.
Four Coppin hits in the seventh allowed the Eagles score three runs in their final at bat but the rally fell just short. Soria got it started once again with a leadoff single and she scored on an RBI double by Bowe. Bowe then scored on an RBI single by Bravo.
Kylie Flagler added the final run for Coppin as she ran for
Sydney Dombrowski who had reached on a fielder's choice before getting to third on Bravo's base knock.
Soria and Bravo each had two hits in the opener with Bravo leading the team with a pair of RBI.
The Eagles only recorded a pair of hits in the nightcap, with Bravo recording one, and Brown, the other. Coppin's lone run came in the first inning as
Megan Narvaez scored on a wild pitch.
Megan Brogden got the start in the circle and allowed five earned runs in 1.1 innings before
Dakota Gartrell gave up six earned in 1.2 innings. Ochoa allowed just one hit in the final two innings for the Navy & Gold.
Coppin opens MEAC play on March 17-18 at Norfolk State. Saturday's doubleheader starts at 1 pm before a 12 pm single game on Sunday.
