DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Coppin State's women's basketball team dropped its second-straight game to MEAC-leading Bethune-Cookman, 64-38, on Saturday afternoon at Moore Gymnasium. The Eagles fall to 6-16 on the year and 5-5 in the MEAC while the Wildcats improve to 16-4 overall and a perfect 8-0 in conference play.
Maraiyah Smith led Coppin with nine points followed by
Chance Graham and
Candice Beverly with six points apiece while
Genesis Lucas added five. Graham also grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds.
The Eagles kept it close early and took an early 2-0 lead on a layup by Graham just 11 seconds into the game. Bethune-Cookman then went on an 8-0 run but layups by Lucas,
Alexis Taylor and Beverly cut the first quarter deficit to a single basket at 10-8.
In the second quarter, the teams traded points to start but after a pair of free throws by Graham with 8:17 left, Bethune closed out the half on a 21-4 run to take a 33-14 halftime lead.
The Wildcats were able to extend their advantage in the third and never looked back, leading by as many as 29 points.
Chasimmie Brown had a double-double 17 points and ten rebounds and Angel Golden added another 17 to lead Bethune, who outshot Coppin, 43.5% to 25.9%.
The Eagles will make their way up north to take on South Carolina State as they close out a three-game road trip on Monday, February 5 at 5:30 pm.
