HANOVER, Md. – Coppin State baseball suffered a 7-4 loss in the final game of the weekend series against MEAC foe Maryland Eastern Shore on Sunday, April 9
th at Joe Cannon Stadium.
The Eagles committed a season-high seven errors.
Coppin State falls to 6-20 overall with a 5-7 MEAC record. Maryland Eastern Shore moves to 7-23 and 5-7 in the conference. Three Eagles had two hits each led by sophomore
Nazier McIlwain's 2-for-4 afternoon with two RBI. Freshman
Allen Saar also had a pair of hits including a double and a run scored. Junior
Brett Helmbrecht also had two hits while junior
John Bonanca had an RBI and senior
Clinton Arnold recorded a career-high two runs scored.
Maryland Eastern Shore got off to a 1-0 advantage with one hit in the first inning. The Eagles quickly responded with a pair of hits in the bottom of the inning to tie things up. Senior
Bryant Miranda had Coppin State's first hit of the game with a single to left field. Miranda stole his ninth base of the season proceeding to second and then advanced to third on a balk by the Hawks pitcher. CSU's first run came on an RBI single to left field by McIlwain scoring Miranda.
In the second inning the Eagles took a 2-1 lead on a pair of hits. Arnold singled to left field and then stole second base. MDES threw a wild pitch advancing Arnold to third and then Bonanca RBI singled to left field bringing in Arnold for the go ahead run.
Two runs for the Hawks in the third inning gave them a 3-2 lead. Coppin State struggled defensively in the sixth inning giving up four runs on four fielding errors and one hit by the Hawks taking a 7-2 advantage.
Arnold drew a walk in the bottom of the seventh and used his speed to score from first base on an RBI double to left field by Saar. The Hawks came up with two wins in the three game series winning game three 7-4.
Coppin State travels to George Washington University for their next game on Tuesday, April 18
th in Washington, DC.
