BERKELEY, Calif. – Coppin State University's women's basketball team dropped to 1-5 on the year with a 74-56 loss to Manhattan College on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Cal Classic at Haas Pavilion. The Jaspers improve to 2-3 on the season.
Genesis Lucas once again led all scorers, recording a game-high 18 points to go with three assists and three steals.
Chance Graham and
Maraiyah Smith also reached double figures with 13 points apiece while Graham grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Eagles made just 29.3% of their shots compared to 45.5% for Manhattan who scored nearly half of its points in the paint (36) and recorded 15 fastbreak points.
After falling behind, 2-0, Coppin led for the majority of the first quarter and led 6-2 after jumpers by Smith and Lucas with 6:19 remaining in the period. After a layup by
Mia Crooms with 3:14 left gave the Eagles an 11-8 lead, the Jaspers closed out the frame with five-straight points and Coppin was unable to overcome the deficit.
Kayla Grimme led Manhattan with 17 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double as three other Jaspers scored in double-digits.
The Navy & Gold will return to action on Thursday, November 30 when they travel to Old Dominion University for an 11 am start.
