CHARLESTON, S.C. – Coppin State University's women's basketball team was outscored, 23-6 in the third quarter and dropped its matchup at Charleston Southern, 72-58 on Monday night at Buccaneer Field House. The Eagles now stand at 1-3 while the Buccaneers move to 2-1 on the season.
Leading, 35-30 at the half after shooting 57.8%, Coppin made just 2-of-12 shots in the third period while Charleston Southern made 9-17 shots including five three pointers. After
Genesis Lucas, who scored a game-high 16 points with nine assists, converted on a three-point play the old fashioned way putting the Eagles up 40-35, the Bucs went on 13-0 run over the next 4:58.
Coppin scored just one point after Lucas' three-point play during the final 7:12 of the period and went into the fourth trailing, 53-41 but clawed its way back to start the fourth. Lucas scored the first four points of the period and
Maraiyah Smith added the next five, cutting Charleston's lead to 53-50 with 6:55 remaining.
The three point deficit would be as close as the Eagles would get as the Buccaneers then went on a 14-2 run to seal the victory.
Four Coppin players scored in double figures with
Oluwadamilola Oloyede just missing a double-double once again, scoring a career-high 11 points with nine rebounds.
