BALTIMORE – The Lady Eagles jumped out to an early lead in the final game of the weekend series against Maryland Eastern Shore and held on for a 4-0 victory on Saturday, March 25
th at the CSU Softball Field.
Freshman pitcher
Megan Narvaez went a complete seven innings on the mound for the Lady Eagles leading them to their second win of the season against Maryland Eastern Shore. She struck out a pair of batters while only walking two and allowed one earned run.
Senior catcher
Shelby Mendoza went 2-for-3 at the plate with her first triple of the season in the first inning. Senior infielder
Danielle Smith also had two hits against the Lady Hawks. Smith scored a run and recorded one of two stolen bases. Freshman infielder
Hatika James posted a hit and an RBI.
The Lady Eagles jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage with three hits in the first inning. Smith led off with a single to right field and then proceeded with stealing second base. CSU's next batter
Shelby Mendoza knocked in an RBI triple to left center field scoring Smith (1-0). After freshman outfielder
Alisha Esqueda was walked she crossed home plate on a throwing error by the UMES defense. Mendoza was on third and a bad throw scored two Lady Eagles (3-0).
In the third inning, CSU had two hits that led to a run. Mendoza led the inning off with a single to center field. Esqueda had the second hit of the inning with a single to left field. The Lady Eagles capitalized off a second error by the Lady Hawks with an RBI from
Hatika James. James reached on an error as Mendoza gave CSU a 4-0 lead.
UMES picked up their first run of the game in the fourth inning, but the Lady Eagles defense remained solid and cruised to a 4-1 win at home. Maryland Eastern Shore drops to 7-17 overall while Coppin State improves to 2-16 this season.
Coppin State's softball team will hit the road for four consecutive games. Their first game of the road trip will be on Tuesday, March 29
th against UMBC at 2 p.m.
