James Hammers Pair of Hits Against Mount St. Mary’s

EMMITSBURG – Softball's Hatika James posted a pair of hits in game one of a double header against Mount St. Mary's (4-19) on Tuesday, March 22nd at Meadows Field. The Lady Eagles (0-15) fell in both games 10-2 and 12-1 in the non-conference matchup.

The Lady Eagles took an early 1-0 lead after the top of the third inning. Trailing Coppin State, Mount St. Mary's responded posting ten combined runs over the next three innings of the non-conference double header. The Mount scored two runs in the third, four in the fourth inning, and sealed the win with four more runs in the fifth inning.

CSU's early advantage came by way of pitcher Melanie Benge's double to left center field in the third inning for an RBI scoring infielder Danielle Smith. Smith got on base with a single to left field prior to Benge's at bat. Infielder Taylor Haller had the Lady Eagles third hit of the inning with a shot to right field.

Coppin State had a bright fourth inning with one run scored on a pair of hits and an error by the Mount St. Mary's defense. Outfielder Hatika James got things going with a single to third base. Then catcher Shelby Mendoza followed with a single to right center. James scored the Lady Eagles final run of the game off an RBI sacrifice fly out to right field by Danielle Smith. The Mount took game one 10-2.

Six Lady Eagles recorded hits leading to a total of eight. Hatika James and Shelby Mendoza both had multi-hits finishing 2-for-3 at the plate against the Mount. James added one run scored along with Danielle Smith. Smith also finished with an RBI with Melanie Benge following suit. Benge took the loss in game one for CSU. She walked two batters and gave up 13 hits.

In game two of the double header Mount St. Mary's dominated 12-1, sweeping the series.

Coppin State scored their lone run of the game in the third inning. Melanie Benge led off with a single to left field followed by a blast to right field by pitcher Dakota Gatrell. Several batters later with the bases loaded designated hitter Cayla Brown reached on a fielder's choice while Gatrell crossed home plate.

The Mount led early with seven runs in the first inning, two in the second inning, and three in the fourth. CSU finished with six hits and drew five walks.

Dakota Gatrell struck out one batter at the mound. She was relieved by Megan Narvaez in the fourth inning that also posted one strike out.

The Lady Eagles softball team will hit the field for a weekend MEAC series at home against Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday, March 25th with a double header slated for 1 p.m.
