Lady Eagles Fall to NCAT in MEAC Championship Game

NORFOLK- Keena Samuels paced the Lady Eagles with a game high 20 points in Coppin State's 65-46 setback loss to North Carolina A&T in the championship game of the 2016 MEAC Women's Basketball Tournament on Saturday, March 12 in Norfolk Scope Arena.
 
 Samuels added four rebounds, two assists and two steals on 8-for-15 shooting from the floor in 36 minutes of game action.
 
She knocked down four of her six foul shots.
 
Senior guard Amber Griffin compiled 10 points and five rebounds in 39 minutes on the floor.
 
Senior center Omaah Tayong corralled a team best 10 rebounds. She chipped in two points and a steal in 26 minutes.
 
Genesis Lucas led the Lady Eagles with two assists. She tallied five points and two steals.
 
Senior forward Jordan Swails led Coppin State with four points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal in 22 minutes off the bench.
 
Senior forward Janelle Lane added four points, two rebounds, one steal and a block in 29 minutes on the court.
 
The Lady Eagles shot a tournament low 28.6% (18-for-63) from the field.
 
Coppin State scored 15 points and racked up eight steals on 22 Lady Aggie turnovers.
 
The Lady Eagles fought back from a 16-point deficit to pull within three points with a 6-0 run late in the third quarter.
 
Coppin State outscored North Carolina A&T in the 2nd quarter, 17-14.
 
The Lady Eagles and Lady Aggies were an even draw in paint points with both teams scoring 22 points in the painted area.
 
Christina Carter led North Carolina A&T with 14 points, four assists and four rebounds. Kala Green added 12 points and six rebounds for the Lady Aggies.
 
It was North Carolina A&T's first tournament crown since 2009 and third overall.
 
Senior guard Amber Griffin and senior forward Janelle Lane earned 2016 MEAC Women's Basketball All-Tournament Team honors.
