NORFOLK, VA - The Coppin State Lady Eagles basketball team completed a season sweep of the Lady Spartans from Norfolk State with a 56-47 victory on Monday, February 22 in Joseph G. Echols Hall in Norfolk. VA.
Coppin State (11-15, 8-6) has now won four consecutive Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) games.
Senior
Omaah Tayong led the Lady Eagles with 13 points and 10 rebounds on 6-of-13 shooting from the field. Tayong now has seven double doubles on the season.
She added a team best three blocks in the win.
Janelle Lane tallied 11 points on 5-of-10 accuracy from the floor. She added six rebounds and a block in 19 minutes of game action.
Keena Samuels scored 10 points, three rebounds and two assists for the Lady Eagles. She knocked down both of her foul shots in 36 minutes on the court.
Genesis Lucas led Coppin State with a team best four assists. She added four points and a game high five steals in 30 minutes for the Lady Eagles.
Seniors
Jordan Swails and
Tanaysa Henderson led the Eagles with four points apiece off the bench.
Swails chipped in eight rebounds, three assists and four steals. She also sunk both of her foul shots.
Henderson added two rebounds, an assist and one block in 13 minutes.
Coppin State outscored Norfolk State 30-26 in the paint and registered 10 steals off 15 Lady Spartan turnovers.
The Lady Eagles led for over 35 minutes with their biggest lead of 14 coming early in the 3rd quarter.
The stifling Lady Eagles defense was stingy all night. Coppin State blocked six shots and allowed no double digit scoring from any Norfolk State players.
Siobhan Beslow led Norfolk State (2-22, 2-12) with six points and eight rebounds. Alexys Long added eight points and two rebounds for the Lady Spartans.
Coppin State will return to action Saturday February 27 for it Homecoming matchup against crosstown rival Morgan State. Tipoff is at 2:00 p.m. in PEC Arena.
