PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Coppin State's
Genesis Lucas and
Amber Griffin combined for 22 points during a 66-58 setback to Maryland Eastern Shore at the William P. Hytche Center in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) women's basketball game Saturday afternoon.
Lucas continued her strong scoring efforts. She led the Eagles for the second straight game in scoring with 12 points. Eight of her points came after intermission for the Eagles (3-15 overall, 2-5 MEAC). She also mixed in a team-high five assists, with five rebounds and a team-high three steals. Lucas has led the Eagles in steals five times this season.
Griffin was strong in finishing with 10 points and four rebounds. It was the sixth time this season she has reached double figures in scoring and ninth-time in her career.
Jordan Swails collected eight points and a team-best eight rebounds.
Omaah Tayong also scored eight points for Coppin State.
The tightly contested contest featured 11 ties and eight lead changes. The Eagles battled foul trouble throughout the game as two starters fouled out and the other three had at least three fouls. UMES attempted 35 foul shots and outrebounded Coppin State, 47-40.
Things looked great for Coppin State when
Janelle Lane scored a layup with six minutes remaining to give the Eagles their largest lead of the game, 54-49. Unfortunately the next time the Eagles scored on a Tayong basket, there were 99 seconds remaining and Coppin State was trailing, 62-56.
UMES (7-11, 4-4) had three players in double figures led by Jessica Long's 17 points. TeAmber Burke scored 12 points and Moengaroa Subritzky finished with 10 points. Alexis Udoji's 10 rebounds were a game-high.
Coppin State returns to action Monday afternoon when it hosts Morgan State at 4:00 p.m. That will be the start of a critical four-game homestand for the Eagles.
