The Eagles fall to Bethune-Cookman

BALTIMORE – Three players scored double figures in Coppin State's 61-58 loss to Bethune-Cookman in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match-up Saturday afternoon in the Physical Education Complex.

For the third consecutive time, junior guard Jordan Swails led the Eagles in scoring with her first career double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds). She tallied 10 of her total points after intermission.

Swails knows that the second half is where she thrives.

"I don't know what it is about the second half," Swails said. "Maybe I just need to get warmed up or something. If I'm not getting it in the first half I'm making sure I get it done in the second half."

Through the last three games, 60 percent (32 points) of Swails' scoring efforts have come after the break.

Bria Harris shined with 13 points and eight rebounds. Janelle Lane was close behind with 11 points and five rebounds of her own. This was the seventh time both players recorded double digits this season.

Junior guard Amber Griffin played the entire 40 minutes for the Eagles and tied her career-high 10 assists. She now has 256 assists, which stands eighth among the all-time assists leaders in Coppin State history. Griffin also added eight points, three steals and three rebounds.

The Eagles (2-12, 1-2 MEAC) and Wildcats were evenly matched throughout the game with eight ties and 11 lead changes. Both teams traded baskets but Bethune-Cookman was able to pull ahead to take a 33-29 lead going into halftime. Coppin State tied the game at 43 with 11 minutes, 29 seconds to go. However, foul trouble hindered the Eagles once again and kept them from being able to gain leverage.

Kendra Cooper led the way for the Wildcats with 20 points. Kailyn Williams earned a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Emily Williams finished with 11 points.

Bethune-Cookman is the third MEAC opponent that Coppin State has held to shooting under 37 percent from the floor (36.9 percent).

The Eagles continue their homestand and MEAC play on Monday against Florida A&M at 5:30 p.m. in the Physical Education Complex.
