Epps Wins Triple Jump; Eagles Post Highest Finish in 16 Years

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Coppin State's Christina Epps won the triple jump title at the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Irwin Belk Stadium and the Eagles posted their highest team finish in 16 years.
Epps finished first in the triple jump with a seasonal-best jump of 40-11.50 and won the event at the outdoor championships for the second time in her career.
Coppin State finished fourth overall in the team standings with 72 points, which marked its best finish since winning the title in 1996. The 72 points are also the highest point total for Coppin State since the 1996 outdoor championships.
Melissa Caddle scored nine points for the Eagles on the final day of competition. She placed second overall in the 400 meters in 54.07 and finished eighth in the 200 meters in 26.85.
Senior Alexis Easterling recorded a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles in a school-record time of 14.07. It capped a stellar meet for Easterling as she won the heptathlon and also placed fourth in the long jump.
Alethia Edwards finished third in the javelin for the Eagles as she posted a throw of 113-08.
The Eagles 4x400-relay team placed fourth overall as the team ofSandra Bonga, Easterling, Shena Brownell and Tanaya Yarde finished in 3:50.12.
Bonga and Jennifer Mitchell also scored points for the Eagles. Bonga was seventh in the 400 meters in 56.66, while Mitchell placed seventh in the triple jump with a mark of 38-4.75.
Hampton won the team title with 123 points followed by Maryland Eastern Shore with 119 points and Florida A&M who finished with 104 points.
