Epps, Mitchell give CSU the jump at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA – Coppin State's dynamic duo of Jennifer Mitchelland Christina Epps enjoyed their time competing on the grand stage of the 120th Penn Relays in front of 21,422 spectators at venerable Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania Thursday afternoon.
Under sun-splashed skies, Mitchell and Epps represented the Eagles in the long jump and each finished among the top 10 against a strong field of competitors.
Mitchell just missed making the finals of the long jump as she finished with the ninth-best mark in the event of 18 feet, 5 inches (5.61 meters). In the past, that would have been good enough to continue jumping. However, the standards were changed this year to include only the top eight performers. Epps finished sixth overall with an effort of 18-11.25 (5.77).
"I came out competing today, but I came up short of getting back to the finals," Mitchell said. "I am pleased with my effort. I am triple-jumping (Friday) and I am hungry. To come up short is disappointing, but I am going to get it tomorrow."
Despite the disappointment, Mitchell couldn't stop smiling. This was her first time competing at the Penn Relays as a collegian. The last time Mitchell competed in the Penn Relays was during her high school days at Newburgh Free Academy. The day was made more memorable when Mitchell saw athletes from her high school. She received the celebrity treatment as they immediately recognized and hugged her.
Overall, Mitchell is enjoying a fantastic outdoor track and field season. This meet was a tune-up for bigger and better accomplishments
