William Grebenstein and
David Hamlettwere named the Coppin State University baseball award winners during the 2014 All-Sport Banquet on Tuesday, May 7. Godfrey won the unsung player award, Grebenstein was named most improved and Hamlett was selected as most valuable player.
They helped Coppin State win a MEAC tournament game for the second straight season and beat Northern Division regular season champion Delaware State four times. The Eagles won 12 games and finished third in the MEAC Northern Division.
Godfrey finished the season with a .203 batting average and 29 hits. He hit two home runs and had four doubles. Godfrey led the Eagles with 18 bases on balls. Godfrey had five multi-hit games and a streak where he reached base in 13 consecutive contests. He drove in a pair of runs to help CSU beat North Carolina Central, 11-8, in extra innings. Godfrey hit home runs against UMES and Delaware State.
Grebenstein won two games on the mound for the Eagles. He tossed a complete-game shutout against Norfolk State. In that 3-0 victory over Norfolk State, Grebenstein allowed two hits and did not permit a Norfolk State runner to reach third base during seven magnificent innings. He had three perfect innings and finished with a season-high six strikeouts. He earned his first victory of the season with a complete game performance against North Carolina Central. In the 5-1 win over NCCU, Grebenstein struck out five batters and allowed one run. He allowed two runs or less in nine of his appearances this past season.
Hamlett was named to the All-MEAC baseball preseason first team. He was listed as MEAC top-ten pro prospects according to Baseball America in its college preview issue. In addition, Hamlett was named to the College Sports Madness MEAC Preseason All-Conference first team. He finished the season with a .279 batting average and led the Eagles with 48 hits. He had a season-high eight game hitting streak (April 2-Aprl 18).
Hamlett had four hits to lead CSU to an 8-6 victory over Delaware State on March 23 that clinched the Eagles first series win over Delaware State since 2005. Overall, Hamlett finished with 12 multi-hit games to lead Coppin State. He had a four-hit performance against Delaware State in an 8-6 victory. In helping the Eagles beat Delaware State in the MEAC tournament, Hamlett reached base four times and slugged a RBI double.
