BALTIMORE – Junior guard
Amber Griffin led Coppin State with 10 points in its 110-51 setback to 14th-ranked Maryland in the Physical Education Complex Sunday afternoon.
Bria Harris had a game-high 11 rebounds for Coppin State. Also turning in solid efforts for the Eagles were
Bria Harris (eight points along with a game-high 11 rebounds),
Jordan Swails (nine points) and
Janelle Lane (eight points). It was the third time this season Harris has grabbed double-digit rebounds.
Meanwhile, Swails was perfect from beyond the arc, making both of her shots. In addition to her five rebounds,
Tanaysa Henderson added seven points.
Despite making 47.8 percent of their shots in the second half, the Eagles (1-9) were unable to keep up with the fast pace set by the Terrapins.
"They played much harder than we did," veteran head coach
Derek Brown said. "Our level of competition was short of how they play and that showed a lot. At home you want to try to score some points and get some confidence. I thought for the most part, we did that a little bit but it's a matter of being confident with what you're doing."
Maryland (9-2) shared the scoring duties with six players scoring double figures. Brene Moseley led the squad with 18 points, eight assists and six rebounds. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough recorded 17 points. Brionna Jones and A'Lexus Harrison had 12 points apiece. Kiara Leslie and Laurin Mincy finished with 13 and 10 points, respectively.
Looking ahead, Coppin State has a week to prepare for its final non-conference foe of the season, Virginia Commonwealth University next Sunday afternoon at the Physical Education Complex.
"It comes down to the personality of the team," Brown said. "We're too laid back. It seems as if we don't know how hard we need to play. This is our number one priority right now. School is out and they should be happy to get on the court and play basketball."
