RALEIGH, N.C. – Three Coppin State University players reached double figures in scoring during its season-opening 81-61 setback to North Carolina State at Reynolds Coliseum Sunday afternoon.
Janelle Lane and
Jordan Swails led the Eagles with 16 points each while guard
Amber Griffin tied her career-high with 12 points. Swails also tied her career-high scoring total. For Lane, it was her eighth career game reaching double figures in scoring.
Tanaysa Henderson had nine points off the bench for the Eagles and
Keena Samuels added a career-best eight points. Her jumper helped Coppin State open a 23-15 lead in the first half.
Coppin State controlled the game for most of the first half, leading by as many as nine points, 17-8 and 19-10 on two occasions in the opening eight minutes. North Carolina State, which participated in last season's NCAA tournament, was able to rally to take a 37-33 halftime lead.
Lane and Swails were hot throughout the game for the Eagles. They combined to make 13-of-16 shots from the field. Swails swished all six of her shot attempts and Lane went 7-for-10. In addition to her perfect shooting effort, Swails also grabbed a career-best eight rebounds.
Bria Harris led Coppin State with nine rebounds.
Griffin recorded her 200th career assist during the game.
Leading N.C. State was Miah Spencer (20 points) and Carlee Schuhmacher (19 points, 11 rebounds).
Coppin State returns to action Wednesday night when it visits UMBC beginning at 7:00 p.m.
