CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Laila Lawrence led all players with 20 points and 12 rebounds while
Angel Jones added 19 points, but the Coppin State women's basketball team fell at Virginia, 74-66, on Saturday afternoon at John Paul Jones Arena. The Eagles fell to 8-6 on the year while the Cavaliers moved to 8-5.

- Lawrence made 8-of-15 shots from the floor and 4-of-5 free throws to record her sixth game with at least 20 points. Tallying five offensive rebounds, Lawrence added to her double-double total with her ninth of the season which stands second nationally.
- The only player in the Nation to average 15 points, nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block, Lawrence added four assists, four steals and a pair of blocks.
- Jones hit seven field goals, two coming from behind the arc, and three free throws to score 19. She matched Lawrence with four assists and had seven rebounds, a block, and a steal.
- Dani McTeer and Cire Worley scored eight points apiece, followed by Mickelle Lowry with five.
- Worley, Tiffany Hammond, Tyler Gray and Arielle-Vadrelle Belinga all had a pair of assists.
- Virginia had four players score in double figures and outshot Coppin, 39.7% to 34.2%
How it Happened
- Coppin stayed right with the Cavaliers for most of the first quarter and cut Virginia's lead to just 15-13 following a three by Jones at the 2:48 mark.
- A 7-0 Cavaliers run extended their advantage to nine before Jones hit a pair of free throws in the closing seconds.
- Virginia outscored Coppin, 13-5 over the final minutes of the second quarter with Lowry burying a three with ten seconds left to make it a 47-29 score at the half.
- Coppin got the better hand of the hosts in the second half, scoring the final seven points of the third, on a three by Worley and two buckets from Lawrence, to pull within 60-47 going into the fourth.
- Virginia answered a three by McTeer with one of its own, giving it a 64-53 lead with 7:21 left in regulation before Coppin scored ten-straight points over the next 3:02 to pull within a single point.
- Jones and Lawrence both had three-point plays with a tip-in by Lawrence while drawing a foul making it a 64-63 score at the 4:19 mark.
- A layup by Lawrence with 1:13 kept it a one-possession game at 69-66 but Virginia answered with a three on the ensuing possession as Coppin missed a pair of threes on its next possession.
- Virginia sealed the victory with a pair of free throws with 18 seconds remaining.
