SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Faith Blackstone led all players with 19 points and eight rebounds, both career highs, as Coppin State's women's basketball team fell at Syracuse, 80-47, on Wednesday night at JMA Wireless Dome. The Eagles fell to 1-3 on the season while the Orange remain undefeated at 3-0.
Blackstone hit 7-of-17 shots from the floor, including four 3-pointers while adding a pair of assists and a block as she returned to the place she started her collegiate career as a freshman.
Laila Lawrence was the only other CSU player in double figures with ten points while
Mossi Staples added eight points.
Tiffany Hammond also scored eight points and was credited with four steals, both of which are career highs.
Coppin was outshot, 47.7% to 29.8% but the Eagles held their own on the glass, trailing the Orange just 42-36 with an identical 13 offensive rebounds. CSU turned the ball over 21 times which translated into 33 points for the hosts.
How it Happened
- Syracuse opened the game with a three before Blackstone answered with a three on the ensuing possession, but the Orange scored the next 13 points to take a 15-2 lead.
- After Staples hit a free throw, Coppin got a three from Blackstone and buckets from Bucknor and Lawrence to cut the deficit to just 17-10.
- The Orange upped their lead to 31-12 at the midway point of the second quarter and 39-18 at the half.
- Coppin played nearly even with Syracuse in the third quarter with Blackstone hitting a three and getting a layup by Lawrence to start the second half.
- Midway through the fourth, Blackstone and Hammond hit back-to-back threes, but the Orange closed the game on a 8-0 run.
Up Next: Coppin will travel to the Sunshine State to play Florida International on Saturday, November 18 at 1 pm. Three days later, the Eagles will be in the Steel City to play Pittsburgh in a special 11:00 am tipoff.
