Trio of Newcomers Lead Women’s Hoops to Rout Over Saint Francis

LORETTO, Pa. – Laila Lawrence put up a double-double 19 points with 16 rebounds while Faith Blackstone and Angel Jones also finished in double figures as Coppin State's women's basketball team routed Saint Francis, 70-34 on Monday night at the Maurice Stokes Center.  The Eagles improve to 1-2 on the year while the Red Flash fall to 0-3.
 
A junior from Lewisville, Texas, Lawrence hit 7-of-14 shots from the floor and nine of her 16 rebounds came at the offensive end. Lawrence also dished out a pair of assists.
 
Blackstone also hit seven shots from the floor for 15 points, grabbed four rebounds and blocked a pair of shots while Jones  finished with 14 points, hitting three 3-pointers along with six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
 
The 36 point margin of victory was Coppin's largest since it defeated Morgan State, 82-38 on February 27, 2016 at PEC Arena.
 
Mossi Staples and Tyler Gray added eight and seven points, respectively, combining for five assists, with Colleen Bucknor and Tiffany Hammond chipping in with four and three points.
 
Cassandra Hawthorne received her most playing time of the season and contributed with five rebounds, two assists and a steal in 18 minutes. Khya Jenkins tallied a pair of rebounds and an assist while Niyah Gaston was credited with an assist in her collegiate debut.
 
The Eagles outshot Saint Francis, 38.6% to 28.8%, outrebounded the Red Flash, 49-34 and forced 20 turnovers which turned into 18 points. Coppin was credited with 20 offensive rebounds, leading to 17 second-chance points.
 
How it Happened
  • Coppin got out of the gates quickly, scoring ten of the first 11 points with Blackstone tallying the first seven before Lawrence converted on a three-point play the fold-fashioned way at the 5:05 mark of the first quarter.
  • Saint Francis cut the deficit back to 11-8 before Staples buried a jumper just before the buzzer to end the first.
  • The Eagles dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Red Flash, 20-3, scoring the final 16 points over a 7:25 stretch.
  • Lawrence and Blackstone each scored six points in the final minutes of the first half with Jones scoring the other four and Coppin took a commanding 33-11 lead into intermission.
  • The hosts scored the first basket of the second half which was quickly matched by Lawrence at the other end, and the Eagles extended their advantage to as many as 30 points on a three by Jones with just under a minutes left in the third.
  • Gray hit a jumper to open the fourth before Saint Francis scored the next four points to get as close as 57-29 with 8:20 left in regulation.
  • Coppin's largest lead of the game was the final score with Bucknor converting on a layup with 1:15 to play.
