Coppin State University's Maraiyah Smith
has been named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Rookie of the Week, it was announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. This is the first weekly award of Smith's career and the first for any Eagles women's basketball player this season.
A freshman guard from nearby Owings Mills, Md., Smith averaged 7.3 points along with 2.3 rebounds while shooting 45 percent from the floor as the Eagles went 1-2 last week.
Smith started the week with a 13 point effort at Stephen F. Austin where she made 5-of-9 field goals with three baskets from deep. Smith then earned her first career start and tallied four points with six rebounds and two assists in a win over Mount St. Mary's before going for five points at Charleston Southern.
The Eagles will travel to Berkeley, Calif., for the Cal Classic on November 24-25. Coppin will take on 23rd-ranked Missouri the opening night at 7 pm Eastern Time before playing either the host Bears, who are ranked 21st in the Associated Press, or Manhattan the following afternoon.
