BEL AIR, Md. – Coppin State's baseball team dropped a pair of games to Wagner College on Saturday night at Harford Community College. The Eagles, who now stand at 1-3-1 on the year, dropped the opener, 3-2 before falling 9-0 in the nightcap.
Quinn Gleed had another quality start which was spoiled as he allowed one unearned run on two hits over 6.0 innings of work. Aside from a walk, Gleed at one point had retired nine-straight Seahawks.
Wagner got ahead first with an unearned run in the second on an RBI single by Will Johnson but the Eagles were able to tie the score with a run in the third.
Devyan Dyal led off the frame with a walk and after
Caleb Duhay sacrificed him over,
Nazier McIlwain hit a high chopper through the right side to score Dyal from second.
Three-straight walks issued to Coppin hitters in the sixth, followed by a passed ball allowed the Eagles to take a 2-1 lead and that was it for Gleed's day.
In relief of Gleed,
Jahmon Taylor struck out the side in the seventh and fanned two more in the eighth but the Seahawks got to him in the ninth with two singles and a walk. With nobody out,
Branden Redfern replaced Taylor and the next batter grounded into a fielder's choice to tie the score at two. The next batter it a deep fly ball to centerfield for what proved to be the game-winner.
Castillo and Duhay each had a pair of hits in game one while
Corey Treyes also reached twice with a base hit and a walk. Dyal also drew a pair of free passes.
Game two was all Wagner who got three runs in the third and two more in the fourth off
Aaron Rea.
Bradley Tuttle pitched a scoreless fifth for the Eagles but gave up a run in the sixth before the Seahawks added three more in the seventh.
McIlwain and
Drew Thomas collected the only hits for Coppin in the nightcap.
Eric Ligda got the win for Wagner in game two, allowing two hits and a walk over 7.0 innings.
The Eagles return to the diamond on Wednesday, February 28 when they travel to Navy for a 3 pm first pitch.
