JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Coppin State's women's tennis team defeated Saint Peter's, 4-3, on Saturday at the Yanitelli Center in the season opener for the Eagles. The victory was the first of first-year head coach
Ebonye Jones' career.
The teams split a pair of doubles matches with Coppin winning in the first position and the Peahens coming away victorious at No. 2. In the first spot,
Brittanie Cahua and
Tinashe Gwaze won, 6-3, while
Ajla Hrnjic and
Shariah Dunwell fell by an identical score in second doubles.
Coppin earned victories at No's. 1, 2 and 5 Singles to seal the victory. In the first spot, Cahua earned a straight-set, 6-3, 6-2 victory. Gwaze was victorious at No. 2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 while
Precious Udofe rebounded from a first set loss to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 in the fifth position.
Dunwell and Hrnjic fell in straight sets in the third and fourth positions, respectively.
The Eagles return to the court on March 2 when they host College of Charleston at 11 am.
