BALTIMORE, Md. – Coppin State's women's volleyball team completed a season sweep of Norfolk State with a four-set (14-25, 26-24, 25-20, 25-20) victory on Friday night at the Physical Education Complex.
Asia Stennis led the Eagles' well-balanced attack with 13 kills and also contributed on the defensive end with seven digs while both
Valiyah Barnes and
Bailee Jackson added eight kills apiece.
Defensively,
Glorines Rosado kept up her solid play at libero recording a match-high 19 digs and was even credited with a key kill in the fourth and final set.
Coppin State (3-22, 3-5 MEAC) dropped the first set as the Spartans (3-19, 0-8) hit a whopping .520 in the frame.
The defense came alive for Coppin in the second set as the Lady Eagles held Norfolk State to just a .056 hitting percentage. The Eagles took an early 8-1 lead after a kill by Stennis but NSU scored three-straight to force a Coppin timeout. Coppin scored the next two points but the Spartans kept finding their way back and even had a set point at 24-22 but a service error followed by an ace by Rosado tied the frame at 24 and two-straight Spartans attack errors gave Coppin the set.
Set three had the leads bounce back and forth early one but with the frame tied at nine, Coppin scored three-straight to force a NSU timeout but that did not stop the momentum. Norfolk would eventually cut the lead to 19-18 but that would be as close as it would get as the Eagles clinched the set on a Spartans error.
The deciding set was once again close until midway through the frame. Tied at 15, Stennis recorded back-to-back aces to prompt a timeout. CSU and NSU would then trade points before a kill by Rosado started a three-point run by the Eagles and giving Coppin an 18-16 advantage. The Eagles scored the next two points to take a four-point lead before two-straight kills by Stennis eventually clinched the match.
Prior to the match, Coppin State's athletic department honored its four seniors
Jennifer Gell,
Valiyah Barnes,
Glorines Rosado and

Coppin closes out the home portion of its schedule on Sunday, October 29 when its hosts Hampton at 3 pm.
