Eagles Basketball Falls to Mount St. Mary’s

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Coppin State men's basketball ended the non-conference portion of their schedule with an 87-49 loss at Mount St. Mary's on Thursday, December 22nd in Knott Arena.

Coppin State drops to 1-14 overall and Mount St. Mary's moves to 2-11 after their first home victory of the season. The Eagles match the 2014-15 squad that also entered MEAC play with a 1-14 overall record.

The Eagles allowed the fifth highest opponent scoring total of the season with the Mount draining 16 three-pointers on 64% shooting from behind the arc. Mount St. Mary's also dished out 24 assists hitting 32-of-47 shot attempts from the field on 68% which were also CSU opponent highs. Coppin State finished with their fourth lowest scoring total and tied season-lows from three-point range going 2-for-15 against the Mount.

Senior Keith Shivers was the only Eagle to net double figures with ten points on 5-of-10 made shots from the field. He added five rebounds, two steals, and two assists in 25 minutes of action. Senior Terry Harris Jr. scored eight points and tied a team-high with seven rebounds. Senior Chas Brown made his Eagle debut scoring seven points knocking down a CSU team-high 3-of-5 free-throws and collected seven rebounds. Defensively, Brown led the Eagles with three steals as Coppin State finished with their second highest steal effort of the season with nine totaled. Freshman Dejuan Clayton added seven points in a team-high 31 minutes played rounding out the Eagles top performers.

Mount St. Mary's had five finish in double-digits paced by Will Miller's game-high 16 points. Junior Robinson added 15 points, Elijah Long had 13 points while both Miles Wilson and Chris Wray each scored 11 points.

Coppin State will open up conference play against the Bulldogs of South Carolina State on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 in the Physical Education Complex. The Eagles lead the all-time series with the Bulldogs 31-29 and have won the last seven meetings in Baltimore between the teams. SC State picked up wins in the most recent meetings last season, 88-83 in Orangeburg and 90-80 in the quarterfinals of the 2016 MEAC Basketball Tournament.
