Eagles Rally From Behind Defeating Goldey-Beacom in Overtime, 89-83

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Eagles picked up their first win of the season in overtime defeating Goldey-Beacom College, 89-83 on Thursday, Dec. 15 in the Physical Education Complex. Junior guard Tre' Thomas had a game-high 25 points leading three Eagles in double figure scoring.
 
Coppin State (1-12) finished with season-highs in points (89), field goals made (27), free-throws made (25), free-throw percentage (.862), rebounds (43) and in assists (17). The Eagles held a 43-36 advantage on the boards while their bench outscored the Lightning 35-8. In overtime Coppin State outscored the Lightning 11-5.
 
Goldey-Beacom (7-3) built a 16 point lead (37-21) over the Eagles in the first half on 52% shooting from the field (18-of-34) while CSU struggled on 32% (12-of-37). The Eagles took 17 three-point attempts with Thomas making all four for CSU in the half. He finished with 12 first half points and senior Terry Harris Jr. added seven points. The Lightning led 43-31 at the half.
 
In the second period, Coppin State improved their defense and got to the charity stripe 20 times sinking 18 attempts. The Lightning made 10-of-23 shots (43%) in the second half and did their best to hold onto to a double-digit lead. At the 17:24 mark the Eagles cut the deficit to two (47-45) on a three-pointer by Harris. GBC responded and pushed the lead back to double figures (59-48) with 13-minutes to go.
 
Harris converted on a pair of free-throws at the 5:27 mark and brought the Eagles to within nine points (69-60). He made more free-throws down the stretch as Coppin State trailed again by two (75-73) with 57-seconds left on the clock. GBC answered with free-throws of their own pushing the lead to four (77-73) with 11-seconds remaining. The Lightning sent Thomas to the free-throw line with six seconds to go, he made both attempts and then quickly fouled GBC with no time coming off the clock. The Lightning missed the first and then made the second free-throw attempt and led by three (78-75).
 
With six seconds to go, freshman guard Dejuan Clayton was fouled behind the three-point line as he attempted a last second shot leaving 1-second on the clock. The true freshman made all three free-throws in front of the home crowd tying the game at 78-78. A last second shot by GBC failed and both teams prepared for overtime.
 
Coppin State dominated the extra session outscoring the Lightning 11-5. Harris had five points in overtime knocking down 3-of-4 free-throws. The Eagles defense held GBC to 2-of-11 shooting from the field in the extra session and 0-for-5 from behind the arc. Two seniors for Coppin State paced the Eagles to victory. Harris had 12 points in the second half with five in overtime while senior Joshua Treadwell had 12 second half points and three in the extra session. The Eagles won their first game of the season ending a 12 game skid to begin the season with an 89-83 victory over Goldey-Beacom.
 
Three Eagles reached double figure scoring anchored by Tre' Thomas. Thomas scored a season-high 25 points, tying a season-best with six three-pointers and going 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Terry Harris Jr. finished with a season-high 21 points, nine rebounds and two assists. He made 10-of-11 free-throws which was a team season-high. Joshua Treadwell scored 19 points off of the CSU bench. Treadwell grabbed seven rebounds, had two steals and made all four of his free-throws. Dejuan Clayton dished out a season-high eight assists and tied a season-best with two steals. Senior Izais Hicks tied a career-high with seven points, making 3-of-5 shots from the field.
 
CSU will face Louisiana at Monroe on Tuesday, Dec. 20, in their third home game of the season. The game time is set for 2 p.m. ET. This will be the first ever meeting between the teams. ULM (4-5) won their last two games and travels to Northwestern State on Sat. Dec. 17 before their trip to Baltimore.
