Samuels, Neal Record Season-Highs at George Washington

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior guards Keena Samuels and Vanessa Neal both scored in double figures against George Washington in a 77-46 loss on Wednesday, Nov. 11th in the Charles E. Smith Center.

Coppin State (0-3) scored a season-high 46 points, made 17 field goals with two three-pointers against the Colonials. The Eagles also converted on 56% (10-18) from the free-throw line, made 11 steals and blocked four shots.

Samuels was the Eagles top scorer with a season-high 17 points with six rebounds and four assists. She picked up the scoring in the second half with ten points on a pair of made three-pointers. Neal had a career-night with 12 points, five rebounds in 35 minutes played. She went 5-for-12 from the field and added an assist and a steal. Freshman Chance Graham scored six points, grabbed six rebounds and recorded a pair of blocked shots.

Coppin State ended the first half with only seven made field goals on 20% shooting from the floor. Neal led the bunch with eight points at the half and Samuels contributed seven points with five rebounds. The Colonials made 21 field goals on 53% shooting from the field including four three-pointers. Both teams committed seven turnovers and GW held a 33-16 rebounding advantage.

Samuels reached double figures in the third quarter and continued to heat up adding seven points to the Eagles 19 points in the fourth which was their highest scoring quarter of the season. Samuels nailed a pair of shots from long range and made a free-throw. Neal scored four points along with red-shirt senior Tiara Goode. Coppin State managed to outscore GW 19-15 in the final quarter but could not overcome the large deficit falling, 77-46.

George Washington made 45% (32-70) of their attempts from the field while Coppin State struggled on 25% (17-66). The Eagles made ten free-throws compared to only six by GW but the Colonials held the advantage on the boards 58-33.

The Eagle will play their fourth consecutive road game opening the season against No. 21/25 West Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 1 p.m. This will be the eighth meeting between the schools with West Virginia winning the previous seven meetings including a 96-64 win last season on Nov. 16, 2015.
