CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Freshman
Chance Graham led two Eagles scoring in double figures with 13 points in a 103-40 loss to the University of Virginia on Sunday, November 13
th in the John Paul Jones Arena.
Coppin State (0-2) struggled from the field shooting 21% (12-of-56) and 15% (2-of-13) from three-point range in their second game of the season. Virginia (2-0) forced 24 total turnovers and outrebounded the Eagles 50-35 in a 63 point win. The Eagles converted 14-of-26 (54%) free-throws and made a pair of three-pointers, their first of the season.
Freshman
Chance Graham finished with a team-high 13 points, nine rebounds, two steals, and an assist. She made 5-of-8 free-throws and 4-of-11 shots from the field. Red-shirt junior
Genesis Lucas played the entire game for the fifth time in her career logging 40 minutes against Virginia. She scored ten points, grabbed six rebounds, with three steals and two assists. She was one of two Eagles that made a three-pointer. Senior
Keena Samuels scored seven points, had two rebounds and a pair of assists. Freshman
Oluwadamilola Oloyede had four points, three rebounds and an assist in her Eagle debut.
Virginia jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter before
Chance Graham scored the Eagles' first points of the game at the 7:09 mark in the period.
Keena Samuels made Coppin State's first three-pointer of the season in the second quarter against the Cavaliers cutting the deficit to 11 (16-5) with 5:36 remaining in the quarter. The Cavs continued their offensive eruption and ended the quarter with a 31-10 advantage.
Samuels and Graham both scored seven points in the first half leading the Eagles offense. Coppin State made nine shots in the first two periods on 30% shooting from the field and only 2-of-4 attempts from the free-throw line. CSU committed 12 turnovers while Virginia made 22-of-40 shots from the field (55%) and led 53-21 at the half.
The Eagles connected on 12-of-22 free-throws in the second half.
Oluwadamilola Oloyede and
Chance Graham both went 4-for-6 from the charity stripe. Coppin State only made three field goals in the final 20 minutes of action paced by
Genesis Lucas. Lucas made a three-pointer and hit a pair of free-throws.
Graham scored six points in the third quarter and Lucas added on five. The fourth quarter scoring was carried by Oloyede's three points and Lucas' two. Virginia dominated the fifth ever matchup on the hardwood between the teams. The Cavaliers went on to win 103-40.
The Eagles will play their third road game to begin the season with a trip to Washington D.C. on Wednesday, Nov. 16th against George Washington. This will be the sixth meeting between the teams with George Washington leading the all-time series 5-0.
